Arora, who retired on April 1, 2024, amassed over 35 years of experience at Statistics Canada. Throughout his remarkable tenure, he brought experience, passion, and knowledge to the role.
“An effective leader needs to figure out how to work in the digital era. It’s about building capabilities and capacity, empathy, and investing in people and their skillsets,” says Arora.

Anil Arora
Chief Statistician of Canada, Statistics Canada
Anil Arora, who was appointed the role of chief statistician in September 2016, has a long and decorated career in the public sector. After joining Statistics Canada in 1988, he has held several positions in regional operations, corporate services, and the redesign of the dissemination function. Anil has led significant transformational initiatives throughout his career with experience and partnerships with international organizations like the United Nations. He has also held roles at Health Canada and Natural Resources Canada.
Sanjeev Gill
Associate Vice-President, Innovation | Executive Director, WatSPEED, University of Waterloo
Sanjeev Gill oversees pan-campus strategies and initiatives that bring together the full innovation capacity of the university to maximize Waterloo’s impact on businesses, governments, and society. As Executive Director of WatSPEED, Gill leads Waterloo’s thrust in lifelong learning to become the premier provider of learning-integrated-work offerings for professionals, corporations, industry associations, and government.
