What is agentic AI, and why does it matter for leaders?

Agentic AI — systems that can plan, reason, call tools, and take multi-step action with limited human oversight — represents the next major inflection point in enterprise AI. Where generative AI changed how organizations create content and answers, agentic AI changes how work itself gets done, shifting AI from an assistant that responds to a colleague that acts.

This executive sprint from WatSPEED at the University of Waterloo gives current and aspiring leaders a working understanding of what agentic AI is, how it is built and governed, where it creates real business value, and what it demands of leadership. Across four logically sequenced live sessions, participants move from technical foundations to strategic application to organizational change — leaving with a practical framework and a roadmap they can apply immediately in their own organization.

This program is regularly updated to reflect the fast-moving realities of agentic AI adoption, tooling, and governance.

What you will learn

Session 1: From Chatbots to Agents — Foundations of Agentic AI

  • Distinguish agentic AI from generative AI and traditional automation — understand what it means for a system to plan, use tools, take action, and adapt without step-by-step human instruction.
  • Examine the core components of an agent: reasoning and planning loops, memory, tool calling, orchestration, and multi-agent collaboration.
  • Introduce a framework for evaluating where agentic AI creates genuine business value versus where it introduces unnecessary complexity or risk.

Session 2: Designing Agentic Workflows — Architecture, Orchestration, and Control

  • Explore how agents are designed to complete multi-step tasks through looping, tool use, and dynamic orchestration across systems and data sources.
  • Examine technical and business guardrails for agentic systems, including permissioning, budget and rate limits, business-rule enforcement, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
  • Work through real architecture patterns — single-agent, multi-agent, and human-supervised — and when each is appropriate for a given task.

Session 3: Agentic AI in the Enterprise — Use Cases, Value, and Return on Investment

  • Survey how agentic AI is being deployed across functions — operations, customer service, finance, software development, marketing, and research — and the value each use case unlocks.
  • Assess build-versus-buy decisions, vendor and platform selection criteria, and how to pilot agentic initiatives without overcommitting resources.
  • Apply an ROI and readiness framework to identify and prioritize agentic AI opportunities within your own organization.

Session 4: Leading the Agentic Organization — Governance, Risk, and Change Leadership

  • Examine how agentic AI expands the enterprise risk and data-privacy surface — what happens when agents access, combine, retain, or transmit sensitive data across systems never designed to talk to one another.
  • Assess the security implications unique to autonomous agents — expanded attack surfaces, prompt injection and tool-misuse risks, credential and permission sprawl, and third-party or supply-chain exposure from connected tools and APIs.
  • Understand accountability and auditability when agents take action — who's responsible when an agent errs, how to log and reconstruct agent decisions, and what "human-in-the-loop" means in practice versus in name only.
  • Design for failure containment — how to bound the blast radius of an agent's mistakes through permissioning, rate limits, sandboxing, and kill switches, so a single failure doesn't cascade across connected systems.
  • Survey the evolving regulatory and compliance landscape for autonomous AI (data protection regulations, sector-specific compliance, emerging AI governance frameworks) and what it means for deployment decisions.
  • Apply a practical governance framework — covering permissioning, data handling, monitoring, and escalation — to assess and de-risk an agentic AI use case relevant to your organization.
