This course uses agile simulations, realistic project scenarios, group discussions, and hands-on exercises to teach you how and why to apply adaptive project management approaches. Upon the completion of this course, you will come away with not just project management theory, but the valuable tools and techniques needed to apply these theories to your own work.

This course is applicable to all project environments and industries for projects with components that are complex, difficult to define scope up front, likely to change due to a high degree of uncertainty and volatility, and best developed iteratively.

This course can be taken as part of the Project Management Certificate.

Course Description

Overview 

This course uses agile simulations, realistic project scenarios, group discussions, and hands-on exercises to teach you how and why to apply adaptive project management approaches. What you will learn 

  • Identify why and when adaptive approaches to project management can be beneficial.
  • Understand common frameworks (including Scrum) and how they apply to adaptive approaches.
  • Follow an adaptive approach to understand common primary delivery roles on projects.
  • Effectively use adaptive delivery techniques (i.e., user stories, story points, personas, backlog items, sprints, scrum meetings, retrospectives, etc.).
  • Understand how to plan and track projects following an adaptive approach.
  • Adopt techniques to assess and communicate project status."

Course Details 

The curriculum is compatible with the project management industry standard set by the Project Management Institute (PMI). The University of Waterloo partners with a project management training provider to offer courses that qualify for project management professional (PMP) Professional Development Units (PDUs) or contact hours. You will receive electronic course notes that parallel the course content and serve as an excellent project management resource tool.
